Can You Be a Social Media Expert?

Of course you can be one but the majority of people online touting the title of "Social Media Expert" have never examined what the title Expert really means.

An Expert in any field has a widely recognized following and is someone who's technique and skills were developed through their extensive experience, education, training, publication or profession. A time frame that is a general rule of thumb for an individual to be labeled as an expert is either 10 years experience or 10,000+ hours of deliberate practice.

Now that you know the definition in layman's terms you can see how people online these days are simply saying things to try and trick you into purchasing their training when they themselves likely enough have little more than 100 hours experience on networks that have only existed for less than a few years.

When seeking out training for anything online if it is "fast and easy" it is probably a scam of some form or another. Genuine quality social networking takes deliberate time and effort.

You will receive what you put in back to you. If you continually spam links and never add any value you will never receive any value in return. Social Networking is about creating a conversation with your customers, friends, clients, and other people stumbling through these digital delinquencies towards a happy medium work and play.

I wrote this article to hopefully steer people who are unfamiliar with Social Networking towards making a smart decision of simply begin the journey into Personally Branding themselves for who they are instead of what they are not.

Sincerely,

Brian Fanslau of YouBrandInc

I completely agree! Twitter seems to be filling up with more and more spammers with their automated annoyance.

Spam sucks and as these networks such as twitter and facebook, more tools will come out similar to email bulk mail filters to help with this.

Ah, scams and SPAM... I've fallen for my share :( At least it seems that I'm not online as much as others, based on the poll :)

You make some usefull points. Although what I think happens anyway is that fraudsters dissappear by natural attrician as people see through them anyway.
